Hi Melinda

Your best bet is to use a filter method that removes everything from water such as water distillation or reverse osmosis.

Stay hydrated,

I am having that exact same thing happen!!
Because we have reverse osmosis with the soft water, my husband thinks I should be ok. But I’m not.
My Dr said with a stern look that I should only have 5mg per day! Wow!
I really needed to hear your experience about the soft water. Thankyou Sally😊

In reply to Brice.

Hi Brice

Question 1: The best way to know for sure is to use a hard water test kit. Laboratory tests are more accurate than the cheaper test strips.

Question 2: Salt free softeners are not necessarily better but they are good for people that don't want the extra hassle of buying and dealing with salt. The biggest drawback is that they typically can't deal with medium to very hard water.

Stay hydrated,

Great site Mr. Water Geek. Two questions:

- I recently moved into a house with a well and water softener. There are several exterior water faucets connected to the house. How can I test the water from those faucets to determine whether the water is coming from the softener or directly from the well?

- Are salt-free water softeners better that those that use salt, or are there associated drawbacks with them?

To ensure you have "tap" water or "filtered" for drinking... Be sure you have separate water lines that route to specific faucets (cold side) usually in the kitchen.
Soft water, when consumed is small quantities WILL NOT HARM a healthy human.
There are some health concerns... Specifically, anyone with kidney disease, or on dialysis should avoid water.
Also, soft water will kill plants over time, potted plants even quicker (salting the earth comes to mind)
This article has valuable information, but it is missing much about how to route water, and materials for routing (by the way, ALL new brass has even less or no lead content)
I agree that drinking soft water exclusively over time is not good for you... but small amounts, even daily, pose zero health risks to people in good health. Certainly less risk than consuming bleached water (enjoying that chlorine?)

In reply to William Stuber.

Hi William

Missing out on healthy minerals (like calcium/magnesium) and consuming extra sodium in your water is not ideal. However, I don't know how significant the health effect is and you may need to speak to a medical expert or nutritionist to understand this better.

If you're worried about this you can get a different pitcher that effectively treats sodium and remineralises. The best filter option to look into is reverse osmosis OR if you prefer using a pitcher, there are a few good options on my AquaTru article.

Hello,

I just bought an Aguagear water filter pitcher, having used bottled water for many years. But just realized the kitchen cold water tap may be hooked up to the water softener. Which means no calcium/magnesium, and added sodium. How much of a health problem would it be for my kids to drink the soft water through a filter that does not remineralize nor remove sodium? Thanks.

In reply to Bryan.

Hi Bryan

Yes, unfiltered soft water has a higher sodium / salt content than regular water.

Water softeners on their own will NOT filter your water and can add extra salt into your diet.

If this is a concern you should consider getting a water filter machine for drinking water like Aquasana Clean Machine OR for a more permanent and convenient solution then you should consider getting a whole house water softener / filter combination that will produce salt-free, fresh drinkable water for you and your family.

We just had Rainsoft quote use a whole house system, $7,500. Their system is a salt based system. We are on City Water with mid range hardness numbers, ph etc. Detroit Water.

My concern reading this article is the drinking aspect. My kids will drink from the fridge and faucets (young). Also, I have a sodium restricted diet.

Would we be better off with a salt less water softener? How do we handle drinking water on a whole home level?

Can a salt based system filter out the sodium.

Sorry for the questions, but thank you in advance.

Hi Debbie

So long as the water is clean and properly filtered it should not do any harm.

However, if you want "healthful" mineral-rich water then consider getting a re-mineralizing filter for your kitchen (or any faucet that you get drinking water from).

For instance, the OPTIMH2O Reverse Osmosis comes with alkaline and remineralization filters.
