Great point, Tyler, about making sure the water is cold. The colder the liquid, the more carbonation it can support. In technical terms, you want to get as close to 5 degrees C as you can (water does a weird thing at 4 degree C when it actually expands before going back to contracting as you cool it further so most commercial devices won't cool below 5 to avoid dealing with the fluctuating volume). Sodastream can absolutely push more CO2 into your water than sodamakers provided your water is cold. I have tested this myself.

Stay hydrated,

In reply to <a href="https://mrwatergeek.com/sodastream-review/#comment-11081">Judy Weeks</a>.

you aren't using ice cold water when carbonating. i also make sure the Co2 is injecting into the water, don't leave a gap as suggested by someone. i press the carbonate button all the way down until i get the bzzzz sound. I completely release the button. I do that 2 more times and it's as carbonated as you'd want. For the record your soda stream can carbonate it more than the soda from the store. But you have to start with very cold water.

Another tip, I use Crystal light powder and mix 1 packet with 1/4 C water to make a concentrated syrup. This will make 2 liters of soda. so re-use a 2L soda bottle to hold the finished product or use 1/2 pack of crystal light if you have a digital scale. I think each pack is 9 grams or something obnoxious like that so it would be 5g crystal light mixed with 2 TBSP water per SS bottle. Verify this first. Favorite flavors are Fruit Punch, Grape, and Orange. Lemonade aint too shabby but use yellow, not pink. And it's all 0 sugar!

final two cents: yes, flavors are sometimes hit or miss. Least favorites that are what I really would like to see: Root beer, cream soda. Best flavors, Dr. Pepper knockoff (can't remember the name), Starry, Pepsi (I prefer coke but it's not available.)

Ah yeah, don't go to the paintball place for CO2 there are oils and things that you dont want

The canister is labeled at 14.5 oz. Place empty cannister on a postage scale, zero it out, add dry ice till you reach 14.5 oz. attach valve and done. I buy dry ice pellets, easier yet.

In the past, I have been very pleased with this product and the discounted refills--it's a no-brainer consumer savings business model. In December, the button on my screw-in model broke--I proceeded to Bed Bath to purchase a new one, however, they only sell the pink disconnect models. Went ahead with it. This is the same on the SS website, as well as Target stores. Three months later, I have come to find that you cannot exchange the empties for refills, at least in the state of Hawaii. Called SS customer svc--worthless exercise. Either the supply chain is extremely slow, which no one seems able to explain, or the company ethics are going down in a hurry in exchange for profit--do they expect people to purchase new cartridges, at least here, and then toss them in the rubbish? Going back to San Pelegrino.

I did some cost calculations. First of all, a full Sodastream C02 canister will only make about 35 liters for the average person (info gleaned from many reviews elsewhere) instead of the 60 liters promised. At $15 per C02 canister (exchange, new full canisters are $60.00!) and $5.99 per bottle of flavor syrup, making soda with a SodaStream costs about twice as much buying two-liter bottles of soda! A Friend used to buy $4.00 worth of dry ice (basically the solid (frozen) form of C02), crush it, and fill his 4 SodaStream canisters (using a scale and fulling by weight). Thats 4 canisters filled for $4.00 and about 1/2 an hours work instead of $60.00!
