Just bought a whole home Rainsoft system, RO under kitchen sink, air cleaner for the HVAC and a system for the laundry machine. After only a week I could not be happier with the system. I did get 2 years no interest to help make it a little more affordable. I can actually drink public water again and not have to buy bottled water or have it delivered anymore. Plus hair and skin feel a lot better, and spending less on lotions and hair products. I also get free soaps and shampoos for 5 years!

For me a major problem with a Rainsoft unit is getting it service. We purchased a house with a Rainsoft unit 18 months ago and have not been able to get it serviced. The local dealer has had continuous staffing issue as is the case with many “service industries”. Getting competent employees, training, and keeping them is a challenge. Until Rainsoft designs a homeowner serviceable unit, you might consider hiring a plumber to install a two stage whole house filter for about $600. It’s not going to soften your water but then a unit that is being bypassed doesn’t either.

I purchased a Rainsoft Water System for $10K- 2 years ago, and now have to replace the whole system because all the parts are failing. To anyone seeking a dependable water softening system, PLEASE DO NOT GET RIPPED OFF BY RAINSOFT!! BE CAUTIOUS of Rainsoft in Columbia, SC. They DON'T care about the customer, ONLY $$$$$ The Head office in Illinois Definitely doesn't care about their customers= STAY AWAY!

I was just quoted 12k for a rainsoft system. Totally geeked to get it installed. I found this article and canceled 2 days later. Salesman used the same high pressure tactics. Told me it was the discounted price, only good the day of the presentation, etc…
Well, I’m glad I canceled. I’ll be looking into one of the systems you mentioned in the article & do a self install. I’m pretty handy myself.

And if Gina still wants to give away their system, I’ll take it if they’re in the Chicagoland area. Lol

In reply to Cusack Steven. I've had mine going on 24 years now. I've had it serviced twice and still doing an excellent job. Just be sure to maintenance it as required. That is why I believe mine is still working. I paid 2K for it and no other system would of lasted this long.

Anyone who would like to try a rainsoft water system: come get the one from my house! I am going to call rainsoft and see if they take it out again (we have not used it in over 10 years due to the constant salt use); suspect they are not going to do that, so I will put it up for free to anyone who wants it 🙂

Hi Ravi

Almost all modern water treatment systems regenerate on demand, can treat hard water and are very efficient.

I would suggest you take your time and see all the other options out there before making your final decision.

Luke: do you have any comments on mechanical whole house water treatment systems to treat city hard water? I had a local vendor come and talk to me about installing a kinetco system and another gentleman talk about Culligan. Both were around $4500 range. But the guy selling the Kinetco was saying it’s more efficient since it regenerates only when required (based on how much water is left) unlike Culligan which runs at a scheduled time. Culligan sales person said their systems ate more efficient.

I just bought a RAINSOFT system. I had the sales guy come by, then the installation guy came by. Now there’s another guy wanting to “come by, show me how to use it, and have me sign a couple things”
What’s he trying to sell me?

Hi Susan

I would say the opposite is true, if you can only afford to do one then reverse osmosis is the one to get and install it under the kitchen sink because it’s the gold standard for producing fresh drinking water. UV is good for removing general bacteria and viruses from water, which means it picks up anything missed by the main filter.

My understanding is that the system will come with basic installation items. Perhaps purchase the system first, see what arrives and pass this information on to your plumber so they can tell you if they need anything else.

Thank you for your reply Luke, what else do I need for a complete system? If I get the UV purification system, do I still need the reverse osmosis?
Does it come with an installation kit and all pipe fittings? I will hire a plumber so I would like to make sure I have all that is needed before he arrives.
