I got both Propur and Alexapure due to a sale. I was mostly concerned about lead and the Propur filters 100%. I noticed they each do better with different contaminants so I filter my water through both to catch everything I can and extend filter life.

If you are concerned about rust, the Propure is not rusting anywhere, however the Alexapure has rust around the lid rim and the screw that holds the knob on the lid. The Propur is well made and has a quality look to it. However that nice stainless steel spigot always drips one drop after shutoff. If you forget to catch in your cup it will end up on the floor. By now I have stacked both units and use the Alexapure's plastic spigot.

My sentiments exactly. I got two propur scout units so I could rotate them in and out of the fridge. My next step is to go up to propur big. No disrespect to Berkley system. I kept telling my son about filtered water with my Proper units, so what does he do? Buys a Berkey system, without fluorine filter. Its a free country!

I'm using a Propur gravity filter since 2 years and I'm very happy with it. I made a lot of research and here's why I bought it:

1) No priming. Especially important for those who buy it whend the world is ending...haha. How you prime with no water pressure...haha.
2) Filtered water tastes exactly as good as unfiltered water (I don't filter lake water... :)) My wife would never accept a water filter if the filtered water tastes worse.I heard people complain about Berkey water taste.
3) No aluminium in filter like Berkey! Crazy! Killer reason for me to not buy Berkey.
4) We have no iron in the water and therefore rust is not an issue so far. I heard Berkey has less problems with rust than Propur.
5) I have a Nomad and use one filter for 1 year. That works. Yes, just 1! I don't filter lake water. I would not feel good using same filter for 5 years - except if world ended and I cannot buy again.

My advice: Look what is in the water in your area and look what is best for you. We are luckily not so stupid to add Fluor to the drinking water. If you have Fluor and want to remove it, I would not do it with a filter using aluminium - even if they assure its not an issue.

Hi Pam

This is not something that I'm familiar with so thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I doubt very much that this is the case because it would not have been approved for sale in the US if it contained even trace levels of lead.

However, this is something that I'm going to keep a close eye on in case of future updates.

Stay hydrated,
Luke

Hi. Thank you for this review. I recently purchased propur filters to replace my berkey filters. However, I'm now very concerned that since the propur filters are made of ceramic, they might contain lead- something that many people have raised in a facebook group I'm a member of. Have you checked propur for lead in their ceramic filter coating?

Hi Julien

You are correct, Berkey does not have NSF awards.

However, it has gone through many tests from independent labs such as Envirotek Laboratories, Inc. (New Jersey), Environmental Toxicology Laboratory (LA) and Analytical Services Inc. (ASI).

Here is a sample of some of those <a href="https://www.mrwatergeek.com/wp-content/uploads/Berkley-Purification-Standards.png" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">results</a> when compared to similar products.

Stay hydrated,
Luke

How can you compare those 2 since only one of them has pass the NFS test. Berkey only state that their system exceed nfs without and proof of protocol use from their third party lab...

Maybe the lifespan of berkey filter is longer, but if the lose in filtering capability before that, no one knows.

Hi Daiva

It all depends on what is most important to you because both have pros and cons.

I think water from the Berkey tastes pretty good but again, other people might have a different taste.

Hi Carol

Not all types of stainless steal attract magnets.

If you're really worried however, you should contact Propur direct and give them your serial number to confirm its authenticity.

Stay hydrated,
