In reply to <a href="https://mrwatergeek.com/off-grid-water-filtration/#comment-5626">Andre</a>.

Hi André

The issue is that without a water test kit you will not know how effective the UV / sunlight has been. So try to get a chlorine water test kit as that's really the only way to know.

If you're really out of options boiling the water might be your best bet. However, I really recommend you get some sort of water filter that comes with some guarantees. Even if it's just a cheap water filter jug.

Stay hydrated,
Luke

QUESTION: Can you filter/remove chlorine from water by standing bottles of water in direct sunlight?

I live in Johannesburg South Africa. We get water supplied (tap water) that is fit for drinking but it has been through chlorination.
We also have extreme high levels of UV in this region.
I once heard that it is good to filter this tap water (at home) in direct sunlight, in bottles. I was told preferably blue bottles. It filters the chlorine out if it stands in the direct sun.
I do not have blue bottles and am using green wine bottles. Some are deeper in the green colour to almost a clear bottle. I leave the cap off.
The water normally stands like that for a couple of days before being used.
So my question does my method filter/clean the water of chlorine? Is it worth doing ?
Does it kill off anything else in the water?

It would be great if you can let me know and if you feel I must add to the process etc.

Thanks in advance
