In reply to Beth Vaughan.

Aloha Beth

It's a tricky one because hardly any water filter device will list petroleum as something that it can filter even if it can (because it's so unusual).

I would look into reverse osmosis because it filters out everything (including minerals). However, most modern reverse osmosis devices also re-mineralise with healthy minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium etc so the water you drink is still nourishing (like this).

You may want to consider a 5 stage RO system (e.g. this one) if you have a larger home / high water usage.

Stay hydrated,
Luke

Aloha Mr Water Geek :)

On Oahu, we’ve had a fuel storage tank leak into an aquifer that is a main source of drinking water.

Can you recommend a filtration system for the sink that can specifically filter petroleum. A recent test showed double the concentration of the acceptable limit. They have stopped pulling from some sources and are flushing the system, but for ease of mind, I’d like install something at home.

I have seen petroleum solvents and gasoline additives listed as being filtered, but is there something more specific I should be looking for?

Hi George

A TDS of 82 is generally not that bad and TDS is also not an accurate indication of contamination levels.

However, I personally prefer the Aquasana OptimH2O because it effectively treats very harmful chemicals ( e.g. lead, asbestos etc) but also re-mineralizes by adding healthy minerals back into the water. This gives a fresh crunchy taste to the water.

I personally use Aquasana products and know people who work in the company so I'm perhaps biased but their RO system has a 90 day guarantee so one could return it if they ended up hating it for any reason.

Stay hydrated

Hi Luke,

I really like your site and honest feedback/research you provide. Do you have a ranking of the top 3 reverse osmosis systems you recommend? I currently have an I-Spring 5 stage and just recently did a TDS on the water and saw it read 82. Although 82 isn’t bad? I had hoping for ~10 being that I had a 5 stage “good quality” system. What 3 reverse osmosis systems/brands do you recommend as I am thinking of moving my ispring that’s in the kitchen to the basement and buying a new reverse osmosis system.

Hi Si
You are right to be skeptical most shower filters don't filter anything and only get good reviews because people find them "easy to install" or because they "look good".
I recommend you get a shower filter that comes with a guarantee of what it can remove and use a water test kit to make sure the guarantee is honest. I did a review a while back and found the Aquasana Shower Water Filter to be the best but make sure you use a water test kit with which ever one you choose.
Best wishes,

Hello - do you know of a GOOD, USEFUL water filter that can be applied directly to the shower in order to remove limescale, chlorine and so forth? There are a lot out there but I have doubts on whether the filtering actually works. Thank you! (Wanted to contact you directly but there is no longer a form..)
